NASEC 2010 - Nov. 16 and 17th, Austin, TX

When the Going Gets Tough, We Get Together”

The North American Syringe Exchange Convention is back for 2010.

We will be neighbors in time with HRC’s 8th National Harm Reduction Conference, sharing the same facilities with separate staff and registration.

NASEC 2010 will be held at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin, TX from the afternoon of Nov. 16th to the evening of Nov. 17th., 2010.

Due to the shortened time available and the current economic condition we will focus the agenda on addressing the situation as contemporary to the time of NASEC as possible. That will include the following:

  1. Current state of syringe exchange in the known universe.
  2. Latest information about the CDC guidelines for federal funding of syringe exchange programs.
  3. Reports from private organizations on the their current state of funding for syringe exchange.
  4. An opportunity for like programs, delivery only, small urban, rural, and so on to share with each other changes they have taken due to the financial situation that have worked, and just as importantly have been big flops. We’ll poll the community of programs about this in September.
  5. A NASEN general session.

There will be snacks and a social hour the early evening of the 16th and dinner, wrap up, and dance your socks off with the music of Austin Swing on the evening of the 17th.

NOTE: Funding for NASEC 2010 has been provided by several funders working together and pooling monies they had left in their education/conference/travel budgets. This gave us enough money to put on the convention. No monies used for NASEC 2010 were available to fund syringe exchange programs.

SUMMER SCHEDULE PLEASE READ

There are five certified human beings that fill the approximately three fte positions and do the work of NASEN. Of the five two are working part time, two will be taking twenty five furlough days and one has her hands full.

Please bear with us, our primary effort will always be to keep the buyer’s club up to date. From now until about the first of September other services that we provide may take us longer. Have a great summer.

All of us, that is, all five human beings who make up the approximately 3 full time positions that operate NASEN are sick. We’ve got some kind of bug and well into the second week or more of feeling poorly. So we are running behind and it will probably take another week or so to catch up. First there’s the data backlog, then the tech question calls to be returned and then updating the start times for the projects on the website. We’ll get it all done as soon as we can and thank you for understanding our delays.

How they’ve managed to keep the office open and the Buyers Club up to date is beyond me.

It’s just another example of how very lucky I am.
